The trades that were hired recently for working on offshore oil rigs
A Storeman/Materials Controller position for temporary work on offshore oil platforms in the North Sea was recently filled by known recruiter Spencer Ogden. The candidate was chosen based on prior experience in the same position on an offshore drilling facility in the UK.
Spencer Ogden Ltd. is a leading recruiting agency for oil & gas industry with offices in London (head office), Aberdeen, Glasgow, Houston USA, Calgary Canada, Sao Paulo Brazil, Singapore, Perth Australia, and Qatar. This intermediary hires globally and is valued by both oil companies and candidates for oil drilling job placement for providing quality service not only by matching the employers and jobseekers, but also through channeling the workforce between different oil drilling projects across the world.
Many of the job listings come with the address or location of the oil company's office or their authorized recruiter that are hiring for oil rig position acting on behalf of the oil company. If listing says a drilling job is in Houston, this is not to be understood literally. The employer may turn out headquartered in Texas, while the rigs or platforms that they operate can be anywhere from Malaysia to the North Sea offshore Norway/UK, or even in the Arctic.
Question of the day: Do offshore drilling rigs hire plumbers?
If you ask this question, it's clear you must be looking for entry level job placement on offshore oil rigs. The second thing that's clear, is that you haven't had any prior experience of working on offshore oil drilling facilities. Sorry to disappoint you, but your plumber's experience isn't likely to be of much use within the terms of obtaining preference before the other candidates applying for mechanical or even simple roustabout positions with oil rigs.
You won't find any plumber jobs on oil platforms, at least this vacancy is what you come across very rarely. The only job they hire frequently for that comes to mind as something having to do with plumbing seems to be pipe fitter. But even with that a more specific certification like in mechanical joint bolting won't impress employers/recruiters.
Meanwhile, if you do some of the research on the Internet, there are courses like pipe fitting for the people who have mastered other disciplines. But mind, plumber or nor plumber, this won't automatically get you to doing pipefitting on the rigs, because in essence pipefitting is an entirely different trade, even if both have to do with pipes.
By the way, it's roughnecks that actually fit the pipes, while pipefitters only bolt them up, which can hardly be called a complicated operation. A person seems to have more chances to become pipe fitter on the rigs/platforms are those who've got some acrobatic skills so they could perform pipe fitting operations even standing upside down.
Storeman, Offshore Alaska
A Storeman with over one year direct experience was recently hired by Spartan Offshore Drilling, LLC for working on Alaska oil platforms. The requirements for this vacancy included medical examination, extensive physical testing and passing a drug test. Educational credentials for this position of Storeman were optional, rather with bigger emphasis on prior expertise of working in similar oilfields or related position to be estimated during interview, as it had been stated in the oil job description. Spartan Offshore Drilling is the employer that was noticed to hire personnel directly for their jack-up oil well drilling and completion jobs located either in Alaska Cook Inlet (28 days on duty / 28 days off rotation roster) or off the shore of Gulf of Mexico (working by shifts, 14/14 rotation roster).
Storeman on oil rigs may also be an entry level position, suitable for persons that retired from the military, since the duties and the responsibilities are basically the same: maintaining stores, receiving stocks, checking the orders, keeping the record of items coming in and going out. The entry level storeman average salary on the offshore oil drilling rigs is $US 60,000.
